Research from Mariana Tek indicates that studios may notice early signs of member churn up to eight months prior to a cancellation or downgrade. This insight allows fitness facilities to proactively engage with members who show declining activity levels.
The data highlights that average monthly visits for members who eventually cancel drop significantly, from 6.2 visits three months prior to 5.4 in the final month. For those downgrading, short-tenured members exhibit a 14% decline in visits leading up to the change, while long-tenured members show a more pronounced decrease, peaking at 7.4 visits eight months before downgrading.
By recognizing these patterns, studios can implement strategies to re-engage members before they decide to leave. Monitoring visit frequency and spending habits can provide valuable insights into member satisfaction and retention efforts.
